Club History

Formed in October 1970, the club was aimed primarily at younger cyclists. Affiliation to all the major UK cycling bodies opened up the opportunity for riders to take part in all aspects of our sport and pastime. Locally we held weekly club nights, Sunday Morning Club runs and a full programme of club time trials held on Tuesday evenings. In those early years many members of school age completed the English Schools Cycling Association awards(E.S.C.A.). To qualify riders had to complete 25, 50 and 100 miles within a given time limit to gain bronze, silver and Gold standards. (E.S.C.A. is now the British Schools Cycling Associations) Looking further afield parental support enabled the club to be represented at Area and National Championships across the whole country. These trips saw riders returning home with Medals of all colours. Most Notable was Paul Wakefield's win in the E.S.C.A Circuit race Championships in 1972. After those initial formative years LRCC continued to make its mark on the cycling scene.
Steve Lawrence, became a double National Road Race Champion, a Commonwealth Gold Medal Winner and represented Britain at the World Championships. Steve Wakefield rode for GB competing in the Milk Race (Now Tour of Britian) and The Peace Race (Rode in Eastern Europe).
In the Junior class Kevin Davis, Andy Johnson, Paul Brown, Graham Watson and John Morstead all proved to be prolific winners, with John then returning to the U.S.A. to become Texas Road Race Champion more than once. Steve Wakefield and Andy Johnson both eventually joined the professional class.
In recent years our older members have kept the club in the news with many top class Time Trial results from Pete Cartledge and Ted Battersby. Steve Marrows, Paul and Steve Wakefield, have all won National Titles in age related Veterans Road Championships.
